We know: Motorized Wheelchairs and Scooters

In today’s market, there are a variety of ways to 'get wheels' for those who are having trouble walking. They range from conventional push chairs, to nifty new scooters.

NOTE: If you’re shopping for a wheelchair and are eligible for Medicare, be sure to check to see if you are entitled to funding to help pay the cost of a chair.

Scooters - For Long Distance, Heavy Duty Travel

Scooters are a nifty form of transport for folks who can walk well enough to get in and out of the scooter chair, and who want to really go places. The chairs are designed as a three or four wheel vehicle, and range in price from $1,000 to more than $3,000. They are designed for riders up to 200-400 pounds. Easy access and comfortable seats make them great for tooling around the neighborhood, the mall, or the grocery store.

They are battery-powered and often come with either solid or foam tires. Accessories include lights, baskets, crutch or walker holders, oxygen tank holders, safety flags, dust covers and extra batteries.

Motorized Wheel Chairs - For Home and Away from Home Use

Battery-powered wheel chairs come in a variety of styles and sizes:

  • Lighter weight, easily transportable chairs can be folded and packed into a car. These are chairs that hold up to 250 pounds and range in price from $2,000 - $3,000. Available for indoor and outdoor use.
  • Motorized wheelchairs with bucket or captain-style seats that are not collapsible but can hold more weight than the lighter weight models - as much as 350 pounds. They range in price from $2,500 to more than $5,000. Available for indoor and outdoor use.
  • Heavy duty motorized wheelchairs can hold more than 400 pounds and are available with both conventional and captain-style seats. They are designed for outdoor and heavy terrain use. They often come with programmable controls. These chairs range from $2,000 - $8,000.

Push Wheel Chairs---Easy to Transport

Push chairs, or transport chairs, are ideal for putting in the car and taking along. In their most basic and lightweight style, they weigh between 20-30 pounds and can carry up to 275 pounds. They cost between $200 - 300. Non-motorized chairs are also available in heavier-duty models that are better suited for more extensive use than these light weight models.
