We Know: All About Spyware

What is spyware?

Spyware is a term that refers to software that can monitor and track computer and internet use and report that information to a database. It can install itself on your computer without your knowledge, and can be potentially harmful to your computer. Depending on the kind of spyware, it can change or alter your computer settings, and generally wreak havoc on your computer.

Where does spyware come from?

Spyware can come from a large number of internet sites. It is often attached to freeware and shareware downloads.

Be very careful when downloading free music or games, as they often have spyware attached to them. Otherwise, spyware can be found in a wide variety of places on the internet, and it is very difficult to predict when and where it might be lurking.

How do I know if I have spyware on my computer?

If you continually see pop-ups, your computer settings suddenly change, or if your computer runs slower or continually crashes, you most likely have some sort of spyware on your computer.

How do I get rid of spyware?

While it's difficult to completely prevent spyware from invading your computer, there are a number of programs available, such as AdAware, that will detect spyware and delete it from your computer.

It is also a good idea to install a good anti-virus program on your computer, as viruses can cause much the same damage as spyware, and the two often show up together.
