We Know: All About Tape Measures

About Digital Tape Measures

Two types of tape measures exist. One is the standard tape measure that has always been around. The second type of tape measure is newer, and it is a digital tape measure. Standard tape measures sell anywhere from around $10-$30, depending on the quality and length, but most average around $10. Digital tape measures average around $100 each.

Some digital tape measures have built-in laser levels. A digital tape measure is very accurate and an LCD displays the measurement. Though digital tape measures are much more expensive than standard tape measures, one of their advantages is that they can accurately measure across work surfaces.

Available Standard Tape Measure Features

Among the tape measure choices and features from which you can choose, a few of the more common ones are listed here:

  • Length and width. Tape measurers come in varying lengths. Depending on what you may be using it for, you can get a shorter or longer tape measure. The longest ones are larger, heavier, and more expensive. Typical lengths for tape measurers are 16', 25', 30', 35', and 100'. Typical widths are 3/4" and 1".
  • Blade lock. A blade lock allows you to prevent the tape from unwinding further which makes one-handed operations easier.
  • Stud center markings. These are convenient when measuring for framing purposes.
