Looking for a moisturizer? Want to choose one that's right for your skin type?

We know: All About Choosing a Moisturizer for Your Skin Type

What is moisturizer?

A facial moisturizer is a product that hydrates the skin and helps to protect the skin against environmental conditions you endure from everyday life. Moisturizers come in the form of creams, lotions or serums and vary in consistency from light to heavy, depending on their ingredients.

What are the common skin types?

Most skin falls into on of 5 types:

  • Normal-skin is velvety, with no acne and even in color
  • Oily- skin is shiny and can suffer from frequent breakouts
  • Dry- skin has dry and itchy patches and is tight
  • Combination-skin is dry across the cheeks and oily on the forehead, chin and nose
  • Sensitive-skin is either dry or oily and easily irritated. Skin may also be blotchy or red and have breakouts

If you are not sure what skin type you have, ask a dermatologist or skin care professional.

How do I know what moisturizer is right for my skin type?

All skin types, even oily skin, need a moisturizer everyday. But the type of moisturizer will vary depending on your skin type.

  • Normal skin-can use most moisturizers, however, moisturizers must be used regularly to maintain well balanced skin
  • Oily skin- choose water based creams and oil free formulations.
  • Dry skin- use a moisturizer containing oil (such as petrolatum).
  • Combination skin-look for products designed for combination skin. Choose a water-based moisturizer and apply it less frequently to oily skin.
  • Sensitive skin-avoid products containing Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAS) which will cause breakouts on sensitive skin. Look for products specifically made for sensitive skin and products free from perfume and dyes that can cause skin irritation.

How should moisturizer be applied?

Start by washing your face with a facial cleanser. Pat your face dry. Place a nickel-sized amount of moisturizer onto the palm of your hand. Using an upward, circular motion, lightly massage the moisturizer into your face. Do not pull or tug on the skin. If your skin is oily, do no massage the product into your skin too much, as massaging stimulates the oil glands.

How much does moisturizer cost?

The cost of moisturizer varies greatly. From inexpensive drugstore branded moisturizers to costly department store cosmetic brand moisturizers, the competition is great. One is not better than the other. The key is to find one that works well with your skin. Look at the descriptions and ingredients on the packaging to see what will suit your skin type. And don't be afraid to ask someone working in the store to help you out.
