We Know: All About Patient Lifts

The Benefits of a Patient Lift

Patient lifts enable the transfer of a person from one place to another, making it easier and safer for the patient as well as the caregiver.

Types of Patient Lifts

Manual Patient Lifts: Operated by the caregiver with the assistance of hydraulics to minimize effort. Manual patient lifts are less expensive than power operated lifts and are also used when there is no convenient power source available. May also be used when transporting the patient from one location to another.

Power Patient Lifts: Operated by the caregiver or patient using a hand control unit. Powered with a rechargeable battery or electrical outlet. Comes with a manual backup in the even that the power fails.

Buying Tips

When buying a patient lift, keep these things in mind:

  • Ask the supplier about extra charges, including sales tax, shipping and handling charges.
  • Ask what the policy is if something should go wrong with the equipment and what the warranty covers.
  • Some medical suppliers will bill Medicare on your behalf, but you should check with them. Also inquire whether they complete any or all paperwork for you. You will also want to find out if Medicare will reimburse you directly.
  • Verify whether Medicare will pay for rental of your patient lift, or if they will pay for the purchase of it.
  • Inquire what the supplier's return policy is, and if you will have to pay for shipping.
