We Know: All About Acidophilus

What is Acidophilus?

Acidophilus, also known as Lactobacillus Acidophilus, is one of many friendly and good bacteria living in the intestines. It is known as a "Probiotic". Acidophilus helps maintain balanced intestinal and vaginal flora and is known to be a natural antibiotic, fighting harmful organisms and yeast overgrowth. It also supports the immune system and eliminates the effects of carcinogens. Acidophilus is recommended for people with digestive disorders, vaginal infections, high cholesterol, and those who suffer from lactose intolerance.

What Foods Contain Acidophilus?

Acidophilus is found in yogurt. Though most yogurts do contain the friendly bacteria, many are pasteurized, and the heating process kills it. The best source is usually yogurt marked as containing "live" or "active" cultures. Supplements are a very effective way to get enough of this good bacteria, as you are sure to get the proper amount needed for the beneficial effects to take place.

Who Needs Extra Acidophilus?

Acidophilus can be added to anyone's regime because it protects health in general by eliminating harmful bacteria and enhancing the immune system. It is extremely beneficial to people with any bowel syndrome. It is also recommended that Acidophilus be taken during an antibiotic therapy because  good bacteria are killed along with the bad ones, leaving yeasts free to grow out of balance. When this happens, yeast infections or other yeast related problems may arise.

Acidophilus can be taken to :

  1. Control Diarrhea
  2. Control Gas
  3. Help control and treat vaginal and urinary tract infections
  4. Control Halitosis (bad breath)
  5. Lower Cholesterol

What are the Risks of Too Much Acidophilus

There really are no known problems associated with taking Acidophilus, aside from the rare cases of excess gas and bloating in the first few days. However, people with weak immune systems, such as people taking steroids, who have AIDS, or had an organ transplant, should not take Acidophilus unless recommended by a physician. Occasionally, the bacteria can cause serious infections.
