We know: All About Cosmetic Dentistry

What’s cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with the appearance of the teeth. Recent advances in technology and dental techniques have made it easier for many people to significantly improve the look of their teeth and their smile.

What kinds of techniques does cosmetic dentistry include?

Cosmetic dentistry techniques can:

  • whiten teeth and remove stains
  • fill gaps and cracks
  • reshape an uneven teeth
  • restore chipped and broken teeth, often using porcelain, tooth colored crowns
  • replace old fillings with virtually invisible fillings
  • place veneers, or shells, over the front or backs of your teeth to make them look better, much like artificial fingernails.

What are the advantages to cosmetic dentistry?

The biggest advantage, of course, is that it can improve the look of your teeth, including the color, shape and positioning (appearing to straighten crooked teeth with an overlay.)

Another benefit is that, if you go to a dentist who has the equipment to do computer ‘imaging’, he or she can show you a picture of what your mouth will look like after the procedures, so you know almost exactly what you’re getting.

What are some of the disadvantages of cosmetic dentistry?

  • Cost: Cosmetic dentistry can be expensive. Applying porcelain veneers to your teeth, for example, can cost between $500 to $1500 per tooth.
  • Wear: The materials used in some procedures, such as veneers and cements will probably wear out over time. You may have to have some procedures repeated in ten or fifteen years.
  • Insurance: Most cosmetic dentistry is not covered by dental insurance.
